About the Author
Roger Pierangelo is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Literacy at Long Island University. He has been an administrator of special education programs and served for eighteen years as a permanent member of Committees on Special Education. He has over thirty years of experience in the public school system as a general education classroom teacher and school psychologist, and is a consultant to numerous private and public schools, PTAs, and SEPTA groups. Pierangelo has also been an evaluator for the New York State Office of Vocational and Rehabilitative Services and a director of a private clinic. He is a New York State licensed clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist, and a Board Certified Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology. Pierangelo is currently president of The National Association of Special Education Teachers, executive director of The American Academy of Special Education Professionals, and vice-president of The National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education.

Pierangelo earned his BS degree from St. John's University, his MS from Queens College, Professional Diploma from Queens College, PhD from Yeshiva University, and Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, Nassau County Psychological Association, New York State Union of Teachers, and Phi Delta Kappa.

Pierangelo is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.

George Giuliani is an assistant professor at Hofstra University's School of Education and Allied Health and Human Services, in the Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education, and Rehabilitation. He is the executive director of the National Association of Special Education Professionals, president of the National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education (NAPCSE), vice-president of the National Association of Special Education Teachers, and an educational consultant for various school districts. He has provided numerous workshops for parents and teachers on a variety of special education and psychological topics.

Giuliani earned Board Certification as a Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. Giuliani is also a New York State licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist, and has an extensive private practice focusing on children with special needs. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, Suffolk County Psychological Association, Psi Chi, American Association of University Professors, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Giuliani earned his BA from the College of the Holy Cross, MS from St. John's University, JD from City University Law School, and PsyD from Rutgers University, The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.

A fairly basic introduction to the art of Jazz dance. Its about as good as can be expected from a book to explain the form and motion of Jazz dance. It covers a general history of the evolution of jazz dance and how it has been influenced and influences other forms of dance and culture. The techniques in the book are well described and are easy enough to follow with the illustrations provided. I found the section on proper eating and possible eating disorders of particular interest considering that it is a problem within the dance community. It also goes into detail on muscle exhaustion and the processes by which can tone muscles and increase ones stretching ability. I must note that the resale value on the item through Amazon it actually quite good so I would recommend checking that out at the end of your course.

This is excellent for students as well as teachers. It goes through very detailed warmups, across the floor exercises and simple combinations. The steps are explained and illustrated. It's always focused on correct body placement and technique.

Although I found some minor errors in the book, overall it does a good job giving simple explanations of jazz dance terminology and moves and shows pictures. It was required for my class and it's been helpful in explaining how to perform moves in simple terms.

Despite the silly cover, this book has proven useful to my personal study of dance. The explanations are clear and diagrams are super helpful.

This book was way expensive for what it was. Even with the help of Amazon I was shocked at the price. It was not this booksellers fault the price was so high. I cant see paying gold prices for a dance class book. Taking food off the table is a bad trade off.

I was required to get this book because I am a college dance minor. Basically, if you've been dancing your whole life, it's everything you already know about dance in a written out form. If that's what you need to improve your dancing go ahead, but other than that it's nothing too special.

Emanuel Derman’s “The Volatility Smile” is an excellent book for those who have learned something about derivatives and now need to think on their own.More than just repeating known formulas and theorems, the author is always careful to distinguish between theories and models, alternating concepts and practice (including end-of-chapter exercises).I really enjoyed Chapters 14 to 18, dealing with Local Volatility and its consequences. As one of the first quants (Bruno Dupire being the other) to develop and publish a local volatility model, Derman explains clearly what is the goal of the model and shows how to observe and test its assumptions.Recommended for those who are learning quantitative finance and an useful addition even to experienced practitioners, who might benefit from the clear expositions in the book in order to better understand how far their results should carry and how better to communicate them.

Somewhat basic introduction to volatility surfaces. Very long but doesn't cover advanced concepts in depth.Would recommend Bergomi for those looking to go deeper.

Emanuel Derman's books are always amazing and inspirational - My Life as A Quant, Models.Behaving.Badly and now The Volatility Smile, an excellent book full of insight and intuition, an outstanding guide for exciting volatility world!

I have read or at least looked at every book on vol smile published in the last 20 years. So I immediately ordered this book as soon as it was announced. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. There is no new research in this volume. It does have a nice summary of classic results, but most of these go back to mid-90s. If you are a financial engineering student, this book might suffice as an introduction into the field. But do not expect to find much on the causes of smile here. If you are an option trader, look elsewhere. I think I can get much more insight reading Fischer Black. If you are looking for math models, there are better books from the SocGen team - Bergomi, Labordere, Guyon.

I am only 6 chapters in but have been enjoying it.

About the Author

Dr. Richard W. Paul is Director of Research and Professional Development at the Center for Critical Thinking and Chair of the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking.  Dr. Paul is an internationally recognized authority on critical thinking, with eight books and over 200 articles on the subject.  Dr. Paul has given lectures on critical thinking at many universities in both the United States and abroad, including Harvard, the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, and the universities of Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, British Columbia, Toronto, and Amsterdam. He taught beginning and advanced courses in critical thinking at the university level for over 20 years.  He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including Distinguished Philosopher (by the Council for Philosophical Studies, 1987), O.C. Tanner Lecturer in Humanities (by Utah State University, 1986), Lansdown Visiting Scholar (by the University of Victoria, 1987), and the Alfred Korsybski Memorial Lecturer (by the Institute for General Semantics, 1987).

 

Dr. Linda Elder is an educational psychologist and a prominent authority on critical thinking. She is President of the Foundation for Critical Thinking and Executive Director of the Center for Critical Thinking. Dr. Elder has taught psychology and critical thinking at the college level and has given presentations to more than 20,000 educators at all levels. She has co-authored four books, including Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Learning and Your Life, Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life and Twenty-Five Days to Better Thinking and Better Living.  She has co-authored twenty thinker’s guides on critical thinking and co-authors a quarterly column on critical thinking in the Journal of Developmental Education.  Dr. Elder has also developed an original stage theory of critical thinking development.  Concerned with understanding and illuminating the relationship between thinking and affect, and the barriers to critical thinking, Dr. Elder has placed these issues at the center of her thinking and her work.
