A very thorough book that offers information on a wealth of creatures that are not often referred to otherwise. It is dated (1999, I believe) but still is very informative and the author went to great lengths to research the subjects. I recommend this book to anyone as an Encyclopedia to the Crypto world - It does not go into a huge depth to any particular animal (I think Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster have the most pages dedicated to each subject - around 3 or 4) but gives general information on each.
perhaps this was helpful for research when it first came out, but it is cursory and is missing far too many alleged species that I had to research for my anthology; see AuthorDan (dot) com. It was a partial help, though, in providing some research sources and helping with my checklist of cryptids.
I have not read the book start to finish but have been using for reference work. The sections on each Cryptid are very thoroughly researched, like the rest of Mr. Coleman's works, making for an informative and interesting read. I wish I had ordered the print version, as I got it digitally to use on an electronic reading device.
3 stars is kind because I respect Loren Coleman as a researcher, but self-indulgence is always boring. Probably one third of this book is about cryptozoologists. That is not why anyone would buy this book. So pages for some obscure friend and a paragraph for many creatures. Not exhaustive either. Disappointing.
This book is okay, but it's out of date with the most recent reality TV stuff. It could also use more creature descriptions and fewer biographical sketches of monster-hunters.
Great reference, through and detailed, a must have for anyone's collection
True descriptions of legends and the people that discovered them. Keeps the reader intrigued , hard to put the book down.
While this book does mention some mythological beings, the existance of a majority of creatures discussed is at least plausible, and there is sufficient evidence to suggest that many may represent animals truly unknown to science.Along with descriptions, some sighting reports, experiences, and discussion of evidence of unknown creatures, this book presents all animals once thought extinct, elusive, and subsequently proven to exist, or rediscovered. As in the case of the famous Coelacanth, a prehistoric fish thought extinct since the Cretaceous Period but found very much alive in 1938.Cryptozoology A-Z also sheds light on cases of misidentification and includes many profiles of people involved with Cryptozoololgical studies.I highly recommend this book for those who wish to learn more about Cryptozoology, the many interesting, monsterous, and bizarre creatures there are, or might be, in our world, and the people who search for them.
